Move ~ Checklists

Preparing for a move can be an overwhelming experience.  The following is a checklist to help you on your way.

  1. Hire a moving company - be sure to get your contract, and all related details in writing.  Firm up the moving date and the schedule day of with the moving company.
  2. Cancel your phone, internet and cable service.  Order a reconnection to your new home.
  3. Cancel your utilities.  Order these services to your new home. 
  4. Pack all perscription medications separately and carry this with you.
  5. Pack a separate box of important legal documents, files, and medical records and carry these with you separately as well.
  6. Back up your computer files and carry this external hard drive with you.  
  7. Drain the fuel from lawn mowers and equipment.  
  8. Drain your water hoses.
  9. Dispose of all hazordous materials and flammables the week prior to your move.  
  10. Lightly moisten your plants for the trip.  This saves you from needing to water during your first week at your new home. 
  11. Take care of your pets and arrange their move as well, including their travel container and records.
  12. If you are in for a long trip, service your car ahead of time, and be sure to have all of your proper insurance and ownership information in your vehicle.
  13. Prepare a first night box - coffee, bedding, household cleaners, toothpaste, toothbrush, pajamas and other essentials you will need upon arrival.
  14. Do a final walk through - check all closets, corners, nooks and cranies, your basement and garage, for anything you may have left behind.
  15. Turn all the lights out and lock up!
