Waterloo Pioneer Memorial Tower The Memorial Tower is one of Waterloo Region's historic and picturesque landmarks. Between 1800 and 1803, more than twenty families traveled from Pennsylvania and settled near the Grand River. In 1923, a group of residents, including descendants of original Mennonite families such as the Sherks and Betzners and members of the Waterloo Historical Society, constructed a monument to honour the first pioneers. An acre of land was selected east of the Grand River at Doon, on the old Betzner homestead which included the graves of several family members.
